Itching to race after 3 weeks of base training, i tag along Gertjan in his cross competition. I am beginning to enjoy the challenge of a cross; diverse terrain, reflex training, and its in the woods.
The route
At the Valentijn Cross, the man made sand hills caught my attention. Have you watched the movie McFarland? The organiser laid some wooden logs to add some challenge to the race route. It was a 2 loop race. There were 2 man made sand hills and a natural rolling sand hills over 300-400m. The race start and finish was located at the Lageveld, a recreational park with a sizeable lake. Part of the route took us along the beach, running on loose sands, jumping off grass onto the sand beach.
My watch recorded a 5.9km run.
Coming third in the age group was a surprise. I was suited up ready to leave if it wasn’t for Gertjan’s podium finish. There, my winter jacket and a pack of Johma spread for lunch!
